BHUTAN
Quiet and meditative Bhutan: where Buddhist serenity fills the air and the spiritual Himalayan mountains stir the soul.
Secretive and steeped in ancient tradition, the magnificent ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’ is one of the last remaining untouched mountain countries on earth. Running along the crest of the Himalayas and bordering Tibet, Bhutan’s landscape is that of deep ravines, thick pine forests and tranquil lakes. Ancient monasteries cling to the mountainsides where spirits are said to dwell amongst the misty snow-capped peaks.
Brightly coloured prayer flags line the route to the monasteries (known locally as Dzongs) where saffron-clad monks, when not in prayer, occupy their time by enjoying a board game or practising the national sport of archery.
A hike up to the Tigers Nest Monastery, delicately poised in the Paro Valley is a must - as is a trip to Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary which is dedicated to the preservation of the legend of the Yeti, encounters with whom many villagers have their own tales to tell.
In the villages, life has remained relatively unchanged for centuries. People are happy, warm and welcoming - and there is an outstanding range of boutique lodges, retreats and luxury spas to unwind in - perfect after a day spent hiking through the mountains.
